“An incredible home with incredible hospitality”
We have just returned from two nights at the Matahui Lodge near Tauranga – a wonderful bed and breakfast to indulge yourself at while exploring the Bay of Plenty. This place has it all – a comfy bed, hot shower with great water pressure, plush towels, extreme luxury and great food and wine….all the things we were looking for. The property has two suites (the Merlot suite and the Cabernet suite), both with beautiful views out to the vineyards on the property and the harbour in the distance. We were the only guests there during our stay which was even nicer! The home itself is huge and well presented, and we felt ‘at home’ the moment we arrived. Attention to detail has been shown everywhere – from the comfy linens and plush robes in the room to the complimentary in-room mini bar. There’s also a lovely gym and library (we didn’t spend much time in either) and a hot tub for the ultimate relaxation (which we did use).
What we weren’t necessarily expecting (but are always hoping for) was the extreme hospitality shown by our hosts, Kay and Trevor. They were only too happy to share their home and surroundings with us. From our casual conversations around wine and nibbles each afternoon to the sharing of travel stories over amazing three course gourmet dinners (prepared by Kay and Trevor), we really enjoyed our time with them.
This review cannot do justice to the wonderful time we had and how beautiful, relaxing and luxurious everything was. We would definitely recommend a stay at Matahui Lodge to anyone!
“An Outstanding Holiday Experience”
We have recently enjoyed a six week holiday in NZ. The undoubted high point of the accommodation and hospitality was our stay with Kay and Trevor at Matahui Lodge. The setting is idyllic; we had an excellent suite with beautiful views over the countryside and sea and will long remember the vibrant birdsong. The meals were outstanding for quality and value, both at breakfast and in the evening - the eye fillet steak on my birthday was unforgettably good. Above all the greeting and the hospitality beat anything that we have experienced in many travels. From the outset we were treated as friends not guests. The evening "sundowner" gathering, where we met their friends and neighbours was immensely enjoyable and unique to Matahui. Matahui Lodge is excellent in all respects, we wish we could have stayed longer and regret that it is so far away. Thank you so much Kay and Trevor.
“Fabulous place, fantastic hosts”
Kay and Trevor made us unbelievably welcome from the very first minute and the purpose-built accommodation is really top class, with beautiful views over the gardens to the bay and its wildlife. The food was wonderful, as was the wine. Staying at Matahui is something of a social event, as the neighbours are likely to drop in to share the hospitality and watch the cricket/rugby. It's well worth staying in for dinner, not just for the food and wine but also to be taken through the history of the lodge and its vineyard. We really should have stayed for longer to enjoy the area to the full.
“New Zealand hosts of the year”
If there was such an award I would give it to Trevor and Kay they are fantastic hosts who make you welcome from the moment you pull up outside their beautiful home. You would be wise to book in for dinner as the food is delicious and the wine is free flowing ( thanks to Trevor who has a dislike of empty glasses, so be warned!!!) The rooms are also very nicely decorated and despite the bad weather we still managed a dip in the hot tub !! A truly memorable few days in great surroundings and exceptional company where we definitely left as friends.
